“I don’t know in advance what I am going to put on canvas any more than I decide beforehand what colours I am going to use.”
Pablo Picasso
Picasso’s statement very much reflects the way I approach my art practise. I prefer to start with an initial mark or stroke of colour and paint intuitively allowing the painting to develop as the layers are applied.
The physicality and tactile properties of multi layered paint and mixed media in the pure abstract form is what excites me.
Bold brush-stokes, dripped paint, scraped, scratched and rubbed marks, collage and thinned glazes are often melded to create the multi layered and textural effects of my works.
By applying multiple layers the compositional elements appear and disappear with accidents and unexpected results often remaining in the final works.
